Mini-Article: What Are Keywords and What Do They Do Anyway?

Usually I'd start with why you should care and what this is for and what results you can expect. For this article, I want to start with what these keywords are as I think you need to know what keywords are in order to follow the conversation about their importance. Then I'll explain (in the next article and the next article) why this might be of important to you or not.

1. Getting found online starts with keywords. If you want to come up under searches for Google, the right keywords have to be placed on your site. Let me use our Almost Everything Communications site as an example.

Some of the terms our site is optimized for include:
Web Design in Albany, CA
Web Design near Berkeley, CA
Web Design near Oakland, CA
San Francisco East Bay Web Design

2. The keywords are actually keyword phrases. Not a single word but a 3-5 word phrase because there is too much competition for most single terms. For example "web designer" has thousands or millions of companies competing for it but when you modify it with another term like Albany Web Designer or Web Designer in Albany, CA then you are competing against just a few other websites.

3. This kind of search engine optimization (SEO) is called organic search engine optimization. This has nothing to do with organic farming practices! Rather, (I think) it means you are using the "organic" structures of the Internet to draw traffic to your site instead of paying for traffic to your site. And in case you were wondering--no one talks about inorganic traffic.

4. With organic search engine optimization you or your web person select, and in many cases, research the keywords (more about that in the next article.) Then the keywords are placed on your site (more in next article.) Search engines like Google then read the keywords and matches your site up with searches and delivers your site up in the search results..
